In this illustrated seminar, Stan will draw on 60 years of his research of a large and important subgroup of non-ordinary states of consciousness that have remarkable healing, transformative, evolutionary, and heuristic potential. Modern psychiatry has no specific name for these states and sees all of them as pathological distortions (“altered states”). Stan coined for these states the term “holotropic,” meaning moving toward wholeness.

Psychonautics can be defined as systematic pursuit and use of holotropic states of conscuousness for self-exploration, spiritual and philosophical quest, ritual activity, artistic and scientific inspiration (“higher creativity”), and healing. The practice of inducing holotropic states can be traced back to the dawn of human history. It has been the most important component in shamanism, the oldest spiritual system and healing art of humanity, in rites of passage and healing ceremonies of native cultures, ancient death/rebirth mysteries, and mystical traditions of all times.

In this seminar, we will review the most important information that is necessary for safe and fruitful use of holotropic states induced pharmacologically, by various non-pharmacological means, or occurring spontaneously (“spiritual emergencies”). We will focus on the radical revision of mainstream understanding of the human psyche that is necessary for safe psychonautics – vast extension of the cartography of the psyche, architecture of emotional and psychosomatic disorders, understanding of the self-healing intelligence of the psyche, the nature and dimensions of consciousness, the phenomenon of synchronicity, and others.

Participants in this seminar will have the opportunity to explore these new principles practically in the immediately following weekend workshop of Holotropic Breathwork.

Holotropic Breathwork™ is a powerful approach to self-exploration and healing that uses very simple means: accelerated breathing, evocative music, and releasing bodywork in a special set and setting. The name Holotropic means literally "moving toward wholeness" (from the Greek "holos"= whole and "trepein"= moving in the direction of something).
This process activates and engages the inner self-healing intelligence of the psyche, so that the quality and content of the experiences is unique to each person and for that particular time and place. It can involve reliving of emotionally important memories from infancy and chilhood, biological birth and prenatal life, and a broad spectrum of transpersonal experiences. While recurring themes are common, no two sessions are ever alike.
Additional elements of the process are mandala drawing and processing in small groups,. Holotropic Breathwork is usually done in groups and participants alternate in the roles of experiencer and "sitter". Experienced facilitators will be available to provide support whenever it is necessary.

Healing the Divide: Men, Women, and Spiritual Reconciliation

May 27 – June 1, 2018,
Esalen Institute, Big Sur, CA

Combining Gender Equity and Reconciliation and Holotropic Breathwork—
to foster transformational healing between masculine and feminine . . .

This workshop integrates two innovative modalities to support deep healing of the gender divide in human society that stems from cultural conditioning related to gender, sexuality, and relational intimacy. Healing the Divide is for people who yearn for authentic healing and reconciliation between the masculine and feminine—on both inner personal levels and outer relational levels. The workshop features a rare return of Dr. Stanislav Grof to Esalen, where he co-founded and developed Holotropic Breathwork over a 20-year period.

Mornings will be devoted to Gender Equity and Reconciliation, a unique process developed over 25 years in multiple countries that facilitates transformational healing across the gender divisions in society. Participants will have the opportunity to share deeply about gender and sexual conditioning in their personal lives, working in same-gender and mixed-gender groups. The process engages multiple dimensions of group process in a safe space, including story telling, small group interaction, ceremony, and other experiential participation.

Afternoons will be spent in Holotropic Breathwork sessions, giving participants the opportunity to activate the natural inner healing energies within the psyche, bringing internal experiences that are often profoundly healing. Breathwork experiences are guided by participants’ innate inner wisdom, and are therefore uniquely tailored to each individual. Evenings will include sharing and integration, embracing key insights and experiences, and participants will co-create a special healing ceremony on the last evening.

This is an intensive workshop, and requires approximately 8 hours of participation each day. Participants agree to attend all sessions. The workshop does not substitute for psychotherapy, but it can significantly deepen and enhance psychotherapy and other healing and personal growth efforts.
